How A Toilet Works
It's A Good Idea To Understand The Mechanics
Prior To Making Any Repairs Or Hiring A Plumber
As a plumber, I am comfortable opening the toilet tank and putting my hands in the water because I know how they are designed. Simply put, it's impossible to get dirty water into the tank. When pressing the flush-lever, a small chain inside the tank lifts the flapper. This action forces the clean water inside the tank to drain out through the flush valve assembly into the toilet bowl. Once flushed the toilet bowl water goes through the back-end trap and into the main drain. Once the tank is empty from flushing, the flapper goes back to its original state and seals the tank. Then water refills the tank from it's fill valve. Once the tank is full, a mechanism known as the float ball or filler float shuts off the fill valve action. Compact modern toilets have small differences.
